Pelvic Passage Politics

A butter-sculpture of the pelvic bone of a cow, symbolising of how we sculpt bones through our diet.
The research started during a residency program at Institute for Postnatural Studies ↗
. It had its first iteration in Medialab Matadero together with a publication by Cthuhlu Books ↗
.
The butter sculpture was presented and devoured (shaped) at an accompanying public program GrassRoots at Mediamatic ↗ . An evening I curated for the Gramounce together with Kees Foekema. ↗

Pelvic Passage Politics

A butter-sculpture of the pelvic bone of a cow, symbolising of how we sculpt bones through our diet.
Over generations, the cow’s pelvic bone has been altered in shape to carry more and more milk weight. A phenomenon that makes natural birth giving, in some breeds, impossible. An ultimate post-natural occurrence that showcase our human view on animals, specifically females, as commodity.
This discovery led to a video-based research into how this part of the body is treated and examined by humankind. It also emerged a side-research how this phenomena is linked to (Dutch grass-) landscape. This formed a public program about the (in)edibility of grass.

Pelvic Passage Politics

A butter-sculpture of the pelvic bone of a cow, symbolising how we literally sculpt bones through our diet.
Over generations, the cow’s pelvic bone has been transformed in shape to carry more and more milk weight. A phenomenon that makes natural birth giving, in some breeds, impossible. An ultimate post-natural occurrence that showcase our human view on animals as commodity.
Over generations, the cow’s pelvic bone has been transformed in shape to carry more and more milk weight. A phenomenon that makes natural birth giving, in some breeds, impossible. An ultimate post-natural occurrence that showcase our human view on animals as commodity.
Discovering this, I began a video-based research into how this part of the body is treated and examined by humankind. As an ultimately feminine body part, carrying both the uterus and milk-udders, I started to wonder whether it has been shaped by patriarchal values. I questioned whether this part is ever politicised across species in similar ways.
Many more such reflections emerged, which first resulted in a video installation using agricultural archive footage and a ceramic replica of the bone. Later, the research materialised into a butter-sculpture of the pelvic bone that was collectively eaten, and thus shaped by our diet. The butter sculpture was accompanied by a public program on the role of grass in today’s Dutch landscape and its relation to human and non-human metabolisms.
